For those of you that might not have heard yet, we bought our first home! (well almost, we close on the 30th) It is a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath two-story colonial built in the 1920s located in a sweet little neighborhood down the street from an elementary school. While the house is actually in excellent condition it is in serious need of updating to feel like the home of a young family in the 21st century. This weekend will be full of stripping wall paper, skimming walls and painting painting painting!
Which brings me to the task staring me in the face for the past month, what colors to feature in my new home? How do I pick the perfect colors? Here is what I’ve done:
I have spent the past month on my iPad reading my HGTV and Better Homes and Gardens magazines and surfing Pinterest. There is not only color inspiration but fantastic details that you might want to incorporate into your room that you should take into consideration later when selecting your paint colors.
Another place I have found tons of inspiration is a fantastic iPad app from HGTV called Folio. It is literally an app full of hundreds of galleries with thousands of photos. You can browse by room, style or color. You can even search for specific spaces or styles that feature your favorite colors. There is also a test you can take to find out what your style is. I took it and got coastal, which is totally me.
Determine How Accessories Fit In
Chances are you have a few truly beloved items in the room you are painting. Take into consideration the color as well as the style of the items. Sometimes you can really highlight an item with a great color on the wall that contrasts with your accessories nicely, other times it’s better to opt for a more neutral color so that it doesn’t compete with the items.
Put the Colors Together
When selecting colors for your room, especially a downstairs or a more open floor plan with connecting rooms, it’s important to put your color swatches next to each other and see how they work together. For me, our living room and dinning room are joined by a big open doorway so it is important that the colors I choose work together. I am opting to go with Manhattan Mist for our living room and I plan to bring in some bright yellows through accessories like flowers and throw pillows. Our dinning room will be a vibrant green called Asparagus, which works really well with the light gray color of our living room.
Next weekend will certainly be a long one, but I hope to chronicle some of the work we do on our new home here on my blog. I have some great DIY projects planned, we will have to see how motivated and productive I can be!
